AKRON, OH (WOIO) - A University of Akron football player charged with assault has been benched.

21 year old lineman Cowles Stewart was suspended from the team after he was charged with felonious assault for a beatdown last month.

According to police reports, Stewart blindsided a 21-year-old fellow student, punching him repeatedly in the face until he was unconscious.

The victim suffered fractures to his cheek and nose.

The suspected motive in the fight - two days before the incident a 20-year-old woman filed a police report saying she was assaulted by the man Stewart is accused of beating.

The woman told police that the man, whom she had been dating, choked her and threatened to kill himself by putting a gun near his head.

Mike Cawood, UA's sports information director, said this morning that Stewart has been suspended pending the outcome of the criminal case.
