LIMA, OH (WOIO) - A Canton man convicted of triple murder arrived at the Oakwood Correctional Facility on Monday, January 25th after being sentenced to death last week.
James Mammone III was convicted of killing his two children 3-year-old James Mammone IV and 5-year-old Macy Mammone along with his 57-year-old former mother-in-law Margaret Eakin to get back at his ex-wife Marcia for divorcing him.
The 35-year-old charged and convicted on three counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary.
Mammone admitted to the slayings and explained why he did it in a seven page letter to the Canton Repository days after his initial arrest. During the trial, cell phone audio recording were played giving jurors insight into Mammone's state of mind before and after the brutal attacks. Mammone also talked to jurors during the last few days of trial trying to explain why he committed the murders.
The children were found in the backseat of Mammone's car with their throats slashed, in their car seats and the body of his former mother-in-law was found in her Poplar Avenue home.
Now, Mammone is sporting a new look at the Oakwood Correctional Facility in Lima, Ohio. Facility workers have shaved Mammone's head and gave him a bright orange jumpsuit.
Stark County's Judge Haas set Mammone's execution for June 8th, 2010. Appeals will most likely delay the execution for several years.
Ohio's male prison inmates on death row are normally housed at the Ohio State Penitentiary or the Mansfield Correctional Institution. Mammone was reportedly taken to the Oakwood Correctional Facility until he is mentally sound for the Mansfield Correctional Institution.
Executions take place at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.
According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Death Row Inmates's website, there are currently 164 males and 1 female on death row.
