FIRST ON 19 ACTION NEWS: Cleveland, OH - The man accused in the death of a Cleveland Police Detective has struck a plea deal in order to avoid the death penalty.
Late Wednesday, Wilson Santiago hesitantly pleaded guilty to killing Officer A.J. Schroeder.
He will spend the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.
A three judge panel had to decide whether to accept the 37-year-old's plea since it was a death penalty case.
Santiago did offer an apology in court - and said he didn't realize police were the ones at his door when he fired the fatal shot.
Schroeder - donning a bullet-proof vest - was fatally struck by a bullet that pierced him under the arm back in August of 2006 as he and his fellow officers served an arrest warrant on W. 98th Street.
Schroeder left behind a wife and infant son who was just 10-months-old when his father was slain.
