14,000 In Cleveland Suburbs Lost Power

SOUTH RUSSELL, Ohio (AP) - As electric company crews were restoring power to about 7,000 customers in suburban Cleveland Thursday afternoon, the lights went out in another 6,700 homes in the area, a FirstEnergy Corp. spokesman said.

A transformer failure in South Russell knocked out power Wednesday night in eight eastern Cleveland suburbs -- Auburn, Bainbridge, Burton, Chagrin Falls, Newbury, Hunting Valley, Russell and South Russell.

Power to those customers was restored by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, spokesman Bob Kozak said.

A downed wire knocked out power to another 6,700 homes in Parma and North Royalton shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Kozak said.

All but a few hundred homes had power restored by 7:30 p.m.

Several other downed wires and transformer problems caused smaller, scattered outages Thursday in other Cleveland suburbs, Kozak said.

The heat did not cause any of the problems.
