CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A federal oversight hearing examining how the city of Cleveland is dealing with the foreclosure crisis.

The hearing - which is taking place this hour at the Federal Courthouse - will focus on how the foreclosure crisis has impacted the Cleveland metropolitan area.

In the last four years, there have been upwards of 47,000 foreclosure filings in Cuyahoga County alone.

The hardest hit areas include Cleveland's eastside, East Cleveland, Maple Heights, Euclid and Garfield Heights.

One Garfield Heights councilman says the foreclosure crisis does not discriminate.

"A lot of them are just walking away from their homes. Some of them just can't take the pressure no more," says Garfield Heights City Council Michael Dudley, Sr. "We (in Garfield Heights) feel the same pain that they feel in Cleveland and we're turning these cities and suburban areas that surround Cleveland almost into ghost town."

There is help available for those who qualify. It's the Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Prevention Program and the United Way's 211 First Call for Help hotline for owners needing foreclosure counseling. The outcomes have had a 53% success rate in preventing foreclosures for people seeking foreclosure counseling.
