CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) – The failing economy is forcing people to remodel their homes instead of selling them.
A popular home improvement guru was in town this weekend at the Home and Garden Show and gave 19 Action News a few tips to revamping your home in tough times.
That's right, "Do-It-Yourself" expert and Extreme Makeover Home Edition host Ty Pennington was on hand dishing tips on how to spruce up your home on a budget.
For example, when it comes to wall décor, Ty suggested "by simply cutting out a stencil, or taking a projector and taking an image that you like ... you can add some character and create wall art."
Pennington also suggested trying out some different textures in your home like fur! "It's like putting slippers on in your home. You just feel better in it" said Pennington.
According to Ty, you don't have to spend a ton of money to change things up around your house. The home guru suggested taking something old and making it new. Recover and repaint old chairs laying around the house. Instead of just throwing a color up on the wall, try framing some wallpaper and put that on the wall!
19 Action News caught up with one couple who saved a lot of money by rolling up their sleeves and putting some elbow grease into their home. Lynn Chapman and her husband have revamped most of their home themselves. "Painting, you name it! He's even tiled our bathroom floors…we save money that way" said Chapman.
Pennington didn't recommend doing everything yourself though! Sometimes you'll have to break down and hire a professional. When it comes to electronics, Ty says "just stay away from it…not a good idea…and I've learned that first hand."
