CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The former doctor convicted of murdering his wife was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday with the possibility of parole in twenty years.
Police officers escorted Essa into the courtroom, adorned in his orange jail uniform.
The proceeding began with the victim impact statements. Rosemarie's parents took to the podium first, followed by a host of friends and other family members.
The most touching part of the proceeding came during the impact statement of Rosemarie's children read by her brother.
Not a dry eye in the courtroom when Rosemarie's brother read the statement from her children. It began:"Rosie was my mommy and I miss her terribly each and every day."
The family urged Essa to admit what he had done. He sat silently.
Essa was convicted of murdering Rosemarie by lacing her calcium pills with cyanide on February 24, 2005. Essa fled the country after his wife's death before he was eventually captured in Cyprus and returned to the U.S. after a lengthy extradition process.
The case really boiled down to cyanide. No one saw Yazeed Essa with it, or saw him buy it. But it was found in his house in the bottle of calcium supplements his wife was taking.
The 38-year-old mother of two told a friend moments before her death that her husband insisted she take what she believed to be a calcium tablet. The tablet was laced with five times more cyanide than necessary to kill a person.
Yazeed Essa's family members said "no comment" after the verdict was read, but an attorney for Essa said they are "disappointed" with the outcome.
Rosemarie's mother and father told 19 Action News that they were thankful for the 38-years they had with their said "I prayed all the way here again for the jury to do the right thing and they did... guess we're even."
