BOSTON (AP) - Indians pitcher Paul Byrd claims he never injected human growth hormone without a doctor's prescription.
Just hours before Game 7 of the American League championship series yesterday, the right-hander acknowledged using the banned drug for a medical condition.
Byrd says he didn't cheat, and he doesn't want Cleveland fans or those he calls "honest, caring people" to think that he did.
He wasn't used in last night's 11-2 loss that ended Cleveland's season and gave the Red Sox a ticket to the World Series.
Byrd claims baseball officials were aware he was taking HGH, but baseball spokesman Pat Courtney tells The New York Times that league officials did not know.
