Editorial: Time To Wake Up

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - We have said it before in this space and we'll say it again - if the citizens of Cuyahoga County refuse to rise up and rid themselves of our corrupt county government, then what misfortune the future brings is what we deserve. For years now, county voters have cast their ballots along strict democratic party lines and we have been rewarded for that blind loyalty with a rogues gallery of public officials whose toil has not been in the public interest, but in their own enrichment.

The first charges in the county-wide corruption investigation came down last week. Federal prosecutors naming four local men including Parma school board member J. Kevin Kelley in a sweeping scandal involving bribery, kickbacks and an assortment of other layoffs in exchange for public contracts. Not named or yet charged but clearly identifiable in the charges are County Commissioner and Democratic party boss Jimmy Dimora and his pal, County Auditor Frank Russo. The four guys charged last week are singing and it's only a matter of time before Dimora and Russo are included in the song.

Face it, folks, we have all been asleep in the hammock while the foxes have taken up residence in the hen house. When are we going to wake up?
