Editorial: Time to end the funding for NPR

Posted: Updated:

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A move by some members of Congress to cut federal funding for national public radio picked up steam in the past week following yet another scandal - this one involving the head of NPR's fund-raising arm who was caught making disparaging remarks about republicans to men posing as potential donors.

The head of NPR, Vivian Schiller, resigned or was forced out not long after the video was made public.

It was last fall, you might remember, when Ms. Schiller and NPR also came under heavy criticism for firing commentator Juan Williams because he dared to make appearances on FOX Cable News.  Now, Republican lawmakers have long accused NPR of a liberal bias and both of these incidents seem to validate that characterization.

But in our opinion, National Public Radio, which gets about 10% of its financing from federal dollars, should be de-funded not because of its politics but because American taxpayers ought not be forced to finance radio stations.

In this age of de-regulation, there are hundreds of broadcasting voices all in search of an audience. NPR should succeed or fail in the marketplace of ideas on its own…..without government subsidies.

Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
