Editorial: Tilting at Windmills

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

With all of the challenges, both economic and social, that confront northeastern Ohio Mayor Frank Jackson believes that windmills in Lake Erie ought to be a priority.

In a guest editorial in the Plain Dealer on Tuesday, the mayor said Greater Cleveland has the potential to become the national leader in renewable energy and he said the city strongly supports efforts by the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation, to develop a wind farm offshore.

The mayor said the wind farm would create 600 initial jobs and the potential for 8,000 more. Well, chalk the mayor up as just the latest to swallow the windmill scam… hook, line and sinker.

The sales pitch that says windmills reduce fossil fuel consumption, create jobs and provide cheap energy is quite simply a lie propagated by wind farm developers who are looking for rich government subsidies to finance their companies and line their pockets.

The fact is, wherever they have been installed they prove to be expensive, inefficient and dependent on taxpayer money. The mayor needs to concentrate on something other than tilting at windmills.

Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
